Description
Business Background:

Powder detergent appearance is a critical product attribute. Product appearance is critical for current users and in attracting non-users. The powder's size and shape are a portion of the appearance. Having the right average particle size and consistent distribution of fine to large powder is essential. Appearance, as measured using particle size, is a critical quality release criterion. Methods to improve particle size measurement will help create insight into controlling the detergent's appearance and lower costs by making fewer waste products.

Business Challenge / Needs Definition:

P&G's powder detergent team would like to see new and more efficient methods for monitoring powder particle size during the production process. The current procedures are slow manual sieving that requires significant labor and provides only a few discontinuous samples of product quality throughout a production run.

There are four key areas where we would like to focus on finding innovative solutions:
  • In-line measurement; Are there methods that will collect particle size information more frequently or continually through a production run allowing for adjustments to the process?
  • Digital measurement: Can the data from the particle size analysis be immediately shared with operators or recorded alongside other production data?
  • Validated measurement: Will the method align with current knowledge around sieved particle size measurement? Will the method be reproducible, repeatable, accurate, and sensitive enough to provide process insights?
  • Fast Measurement: Can the proposed method offer a data-point in five minutes or less with a minimum to

This brief's regional focus is Latin America, and pilot activations will initially focus on Latin American. Startups applying must have a presence or the ability to activate in the region immediately.

Relevant technology domains may include, but are not limited to:

  • Laser diffraction methods (particle in air)
  • Vacuum and jet sieving (in-line)
  • Optical particle size measurement (in air and on a moving belt)
  • Image Analysis automation (Static or dynamic Image Analysis)
